A Stillmeadow Scrapbook

About ten years ago, a serious effort was underway to save the land around Stillmeadow from development. One of the 'thank you gifts' for donating a certain amount of money was a large black & white photo of Stillmeadow, taken by Jill in 1945. I have that framed and hanging here in my reading/writing/computer room.

Another gift was a copy of A Stillmeadow Scrapbook, a little spiral-bound booklet that Gladys's family put together. The photos in it include one of Gladys as a young adult, her wedding picture, her parents' wedding picture (her mother had a very impressive dress!), and others. I love the 'before and after' pics of Stillmeadow; it really does look more than a little dilapidated in the first one, and perfectly lovely in the second.

Besides the photos, the booklet includes some of Gladys's previously unpublished writings, and some little-known pieces that appeared here and there. A a review of one of her daughter's books, a finished column, a Cape Cod log kept one summer by her and her guests, the draft of an introduction to a book (that has never been finished or published) of her letters, and assorted letters themselves. The love letters at the end (to and from her) are perhaps the most touching.

I enjoyed this little book, as reading something 'new' from Gladys is always a treat.
